Abstract

This paper reports the results of an experimental programme aimed at examining the performance of concrete produced with glass as cement substitute. Recycling, decompose and disposal of waste glass possesses major problem for municipalities everywhere and this problem can be greatly eliminated by reusing waste glass as cement replacement in concrete moreover, reusing waste materials in construction can reduce the demand on the sources of primary materials. Cement replacement by glass powder at varying percentages of 0, 5,10,15,20,25,30,35 and 40 has been studied. Replacement of 20% cement by glass powder was found to be beneficial and density of concrete reduces with the increase in the percentage of replacement of cement by glass powder The use of pozzolanic materials is as old as that of the art of concrete construction. It was recognized long time ago, that the suitable pozzolans used in appropriate amount, modify certain properties of fresh and hardened mortars and concretes. Ancient Greeks and roman's used certain finely divided siliceous materials which when mixed with lime produced strong cementing material having hydraulic properties and such cementing materials were employed in the construction of acquaducts,arch,bridges etc.One such material was consolidated volcanic ash or tuff found near pozzuoli(Italy)near Vesuvius.
